Together in God’s Word 02/16/11 • Reflections from the One Year Bible / by Stanley A. Parker
Mark 1:35 (ESV)
[35] And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.
I have never been able to just read over this verse.
NEVER
It always seizes my attention.
ALWAYS
It just screams out so much truth and perspective!
SO MUCH
Daily Jesus sought silence and solitude that He might commune with our Father.
DAILY
Out of need?
PERHAPS
Out of desire?
ABSOLUTELY!
And so the question…
THE
If Jesus needed silence and solitude
to connect with our Father
at a depth that satisfied His need and desire
do I really think I can get on the fly
what I need
to fill my soul
and fuel my life
amidst the noise of my day?

Wouldn’t this verse be a fine one to include in our memory work for 2011? It’s such a good picture of what our lives must include. We seem to work so hard to AVOID being in “a desolate place–” a condition of emptiness. I know what it is to be like a sponge who squeezes out all the “stuff” I’ve taken on in order that when I am immersed in the Living Water, I take it into every pore.

I’d like to have one of my memory verses remind me to INTENTIONALLY seek that place again and again.
