Together in God’s Word 02/26/11 • Reflections from the One Year Bible / by Stanley A. Parker

Psalms 42:11 (ESV)
[11] Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

I REALLY like this verse!

It acknowledges that I have this emotional side to me that can get thrown off in reaction to adversity.

BUT

This verse doesn’t leave me a victim to those emotions!

I am MORE than just my emotions!

I DO have a cognitive side of me as well!

“The mental process of knowing, including aspects such as awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgment.”

And with it I can KNOW God!

I can be AWARE of His promises to me!

I can PERCEIVE His presence with me!

I can use REASON to actually instruct my emotions!

And I can exercise sound JUDGMENT in choosing HOPE over turmoil!

LOVE IT!

Psalms 42:11 (MSG)
[11] Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?
Fix my eyes on God—
soon I’ll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
He’s my God.
